Business as usual…(?)

Well, i have literally finished my finals about 3 hours ago. they went well, (if anyone cares!) and i hope to get some more work on the dogs of war soon enough. i have the empire book, and i have managed to put a list together containeing everything that was in the dogs of war list (sans the minotaurs :( ) and a WHOLE lot more. christ dogs of war are expensive!
so basically, this gives me an incentive to get cracking ont he painting! the big blocks of pikemen are bak in the army (which i have to say, i’m pleased about giving the time and money i’ve put into them!) in the new guise as spearmen on the empire. so basically they got 4 points cheaper, lost their pikes and gained the detatchment rule! and ontop of that they are nice to paint! some new units will be emerging too, such as the greek urn catapults (mortars) and possible a hellblaster, which will be the mad inventer “Archidimedese’s patented whirling ceramic thrower of death ™” or something of that ilk… not sure how i’m going to make it, but at the moment leaning towards a scratch build of basing it on a goblin hewer! and it will fire urns and plates! :D
anyway, enough shit, i’m off to get drink!
Pics soon… yada yada, you’ve all heard that before… maybe i’ll deliver this time? ;)

Thinking about it…

I’m now actually in the middle of my exams, so i’m sorry, despite the post, still no photos! I have some that i took with my new camera, but they are pretty poor quality, i need to work out the best way to take macro photos (and its not an expensive, fancy camera!).
I was toying with the idea of making the army an empire army rules wise, that way it could deal with the competitive-ness issue.
I can take the giant, and the pikemen blocks would become spearmen, the peltasts would be huntsmen (although, they arn’t stuck together yet, so might not even feature at all!) and the spartans would be greatswords. the only problem i’m having is getting the ogres into the army, after i’d spent so long coverting (and so many £££ on getting!) the minotaurs, it seems a shame to have to leave them out when they are ready fr undercoating…
The campaign weekend next year might allow me to take ogres yet though, there is a chance of a marienburg list! (empire with mercinaries!) we shall see… and i’m sure in friendly games, my mates wouldnt mind a couple of maneaters being on the field. they are good, but you bloody pay for them in points (and as mentioned before, £££!)
right, rant over,
I’m going to the library!

P.S.: getting quite excited about the vitrix napoleonics i’ve just bought (yes, i know, too many projects spoil the broth etc…) but the models are ACE! i’ve nearly got a full company, and there is a can of red spraypaint on it’s way to me… could be a good one! :D

More photos

just ordered a nice new camera off ebay, so when it arrives i’ll get some pictures up on here of what i’ve been up to, including:
+ updated dogs of war pictures (finally!, therse ones are WAY out of date!)
+ D&D miniatures i’ve been working on, including terminus as promised, and an old rackham gryphonne executioner!

Also, i’ve decided to damn it all and stick with the dogs of war, although there have been radical army list changes (to make it a bit more competitive, although it will still have its arse handed to it on a regular basis methinks…), and i’m now unsure whether any pikemen at all will make the final cut! and i need to make some more hoplites with CCW and shield, or hoplites with 2 handed weapons… i have yet to work out what bits i’m going to use for that! also: MORE GIANTS! :)

A balanced army?… that’ll never work… will it?

With recent news back from my mate who went to the campaign weekend i missed; warhammer is all monsters and no balanced armies (even at campaign weekends) ,its got me to thinking…

a) i have a dogs of war army, and by their performance at the weekend, no amount of cool in character stuff is going to get over the facet that between Adam and mike they came away with 10 losses a draw and a win that was secured by the team allied to mike. also, i didnt mind the army being shite, as long as i could get a best army nomination, but it has to be all campaign specific and shit now, so i can’t even do that. the speed i get things done, i’ll be lucky to have the army half finished by next year, let alone with extra campaign specific units. Oh, and dogs of war don’t get any…

b) so that leads me onto my other army, bretonnians. these guys have enjoyed success when i’ve taken them the last 2 years, and apparently were the winning faction again this year (although by the sounds of it, with much gamesmanship and not enough charging across the table blindly, lances levelled for my liking). i’ve never really fielded much variety in my bretonnian army, i’ve always tried to field a few units of knights, with one unit always being grail knights (because they are solid!), and peasants: the controversial choice.

so… if nobody else plays it properly, why the hell should i? why not stick a lord on a pegasus and do what every other bastard does and have about 17 units of pegasus knights whizzing round scaring the shite out of everyone? ok, bit of an exaggeration that, but still, for each ranked unit of peasants i drop, i could have another block of 6 knights errant, who to be honest, are MUCH more use, and fit in with the charging across the battlefield to flatten whatever lines up against me. hell, if i drop the archers too i could have another damsel, give another unit magic resistance and generate that all important extra dispell dice, taking me up to a reasonably healthy 6 (using the chalice of malfleur, and praying i dont roll a 1.) which should leave me… amrginally less flattened by every sodding army that seems to have about 20 jiggillion power dice to turn my army into a red stain on the battlefield by turn 3.

What am i to do? i’ve seen decent lists online with no archers in it, just with the trebuchet for firs support, they rocket across the battlefield and butcher everything, they are in CC by turn 2, its only got to weather a round of magic and shooting then it’s all over. am i to descend into depravity (incidentally, a good album by dying fetus, download it if you like your death metal!) and drop the peasants, in favour of having a list that can actually stand a fighting chance against all these hell pit abominations and screaming bells and minotaur armies being fielded nowadays (in CAMPAIGN armies too, for fucks sake!). or do i cling to my peasant and hold my head up high, only to have it lopped off by a passing chaos lord, or turned into a stormvermin by some broken skaven magic?

picture gallery…

once again, my quest to procrastinate has lead me here! I’ve uploaded all the pics so far into the picture gallery. So if you want to just look straight at all the good bits, you can just click “picture gallery” the tab at the top of the page, and you don’t have to wade through all the text! I’m so good to you guys…

no posts for a while

This site is basically on ice now until i finish my dissertation/exams. they had to come first at some time! :(
should get back to doing more soldiers around may time, although i may get chance to do a bit more work on them in April. either way, there’s no pressure for me to complete the army now that i can’t go next weekend.
Speak to you later folks…

A few changes.

Hey guys,

As you can see, in my quest to avoid doing any university work, i have discovered how to use the settings on my blog! it now looks alot fancier and i’ve worked out how to stick images in the header, sidebars and posts! as you can see above, to the left and below. ok the one below doesn’t have much to do with dogs of war like the other 2 (which i ripped from old white dwarf articles about dogs of war, thanks games workshop, not plagiarism etc..!) but it has shown me that if i dont use the gallery view like i have in previous posts, the size of the images is limited in width (to 480 pixels exactly, no more!). its a bit of a pain, but i’ll get round it, besides there is an image editor built into the blog, so i can fiddle around with the images in post production :D and they should be more than big enough to give you guys an idea of whats going on with my painting/ modelling. And of course this opens the way for more close ups and stuff, as i now have lots of megabytes to play with on photobucket! bwahahahahahaaa!

another quick one…

forgot to say the other day, i ordered the blood bowl medusa (cheerleader for one of the undead teams) which is going to be one of my wizards. I think i’m going to have a crack at a snake set of legs for her, i have plenty of time, it just would be a pain in the arse. I’t would look better though (IMHO)
I originally had grand ideas of using guys with sculpted orbs whizzing round they head/flying etc… but with the pikemen units being what they will live in, i have to take the fact that the pikes want to stick over their heads into account. I think i’m going to use a classic bretonnian damsel on foot to be my other wizard (prophetess) I’ll take the sword and scepter out of her hands though and give her a big wavy staff instead. maybe something else in the sword hand… i havn’t decided.
Cheers

I’m ALIIIIIVE!

Hey guys, just a heads up that i havn’t dropped off the edge of the world (completely!). I have infact been very busy on the old modelling front…at least for me. I have finished terminus (finally!) who i spoke about before, and also a new wizard character for my friend john’s D&D game.
This one isn’t as impressive as terminus, just made from a high elf archer with spearman arms with the spear trimmed off and a bead stuck on top to make a mages staff. The paint scheme is fairly straight forward too, just the classic red and black, althought i gloss coated the black to make it look like a cured leather type garment (if you reaaaalllly squint! :D ). The pose is a little more static than i usually like, but the main reason i’m so impressed with this dude is that i assembled and painted him in about 3 hours before going down to play!
Also the army has not been neglected, the cyclops is progressing nicely. the Orc and goblin giant has had major facial surgery, and now has one big eye in the middle of his face like the the d&d ones, but he’s not nearly as spikey! (see the picture at the bottom…). I may work on that a bit more. and i have just acquired some of those fancy new minotaurs to be my ogre maneaters. thats some progress! now i just need to stop playing Xbox and work on the army.
pics will follow when i take some!
cheers,
Dave

So…. ill….

Sorry folks have been mightily sick over that past few weeks, so no updates on here. still feels like my tonsils might burst too, but never mind that.

The greeks are back in the firing line for 2 reasons:

1: the praetorian heads i have bought dont fit the sale of the GW miniatures (i had a feeling they wouldn’t)

2: not that it matters, but the campaign pack has some fairly kick ass new pikemen rules in it, and its got me all excited about pikemen again.

right, i’m back off to bed, short and sweet today.

Dave
